The temple in Somnathpur was constructed in the 12th-13th centuries by Hoysala rulers and their officials. It is lavishly adorned with sculpture. The sculptures probably cover each and every inch of the wall space. This particular style of intensely packed sculptural scheme is the characteristic exclusive to the Hoysala art.

Day04 | Coorg
Enjoy a day of fun exploring this pretty coffee town. The best way to enjoy Coorg is to take a bicycle rickshaw tour. Visit the Omkareshwara Temple, the Madikeri Fort and Abbey Falls. Medikeri Fort was first built in the last quarter of 17th century by Mudduraja. It was rebuilt into fort of stone and bricks by Tipu Sultan, who gave for the name of Jaffarabad. As you enter the fort, you will see two life-size elephants made of mortar. Ã Â Inside the inner fort, there was a temple dedicated to of Virabhadra which was removed by the British in the year of 1855 so as to build an Anglican Church in its place. The Church presents beautiful architecture with Gothic style. Omkareshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva that was built by Linga Rajendra II in 1820. With central dome and four turrets at the corners, this temple reflects the Muhammadan style of architecture. Near the entrance of the temple, there is a Linga installed, similar to that of the Muslim Dargah. The history of the temple is inscribed on a copper plate, which has been fixed at the entrance door frame. Nestled a midst are private coffee plantations. The Abbey Falls provide a striking contrast to the sylvan surroundings of Coorg. A narrow road winding through the green and dense foliage of surrounding coffee plantations leads to Abbey Falls. The gushing waters of the Abbey falls, tumbling down a rocky ravine, results in a deafening sound that can be heard from a distance. The rest of the day is at leisure.
